A Home Should be

There is an
interesting Infographic put out by the California Association of
Realtor's (CAR) showing what people want in Technology for their
homes. Here it is:

Well
it is no secret but people want Technology in their homes, they want
homes integrated with their smart phones. They want a high tech

I
agree that have technology in the home helps us manage our homes and
enhances our lives. But be careful. There are many trends that have
come and gone in home building. Just 10 years ago it was very common
to put in built in cabinetry or spaces for TV's; but with the growth
of flat screen TV's many of those spaces are obsolete, too small, or
just ugly spots that need to be filled. In the 70's (yes I am that
old) it was cool to have intercom systems (often with built in
radios) in homes; now they are often covered over or gone. How often
do you get a new phone? How often does your software/entertainment
system/computer/phone/etc become obsolete after just a couple years.

What
people want in terms of built in Technology is often vague on no
mention of price. But I do not think most of us can afford to trade
in our homes every couple of years, nor do we want to. The question
should always be, “Want do you want in terms of smart tech?”
“How much are you willing to pay for it?” “How flexible is
it?” and “Would you be better off waiting a few years for the
tech to get better and the prices to come done?”

I
think with the shrinking sizes of technology, shrinking sizes of tech
prices, and the rapid improvements of technology and integrated home
technology will soon be a dinosaur. Wireless is the direction
things seem to be going (so no wiring the entire house) and things
are getting small and cheaper. Individual components or systems will
be available for installation in different areas of your home. Maybe
door hardware that can be locked remotely without having to wire it
into the entire home. You can have a smart refrigerator that does
not have to run through a vast home network; but wirelessly connects
to your wireless devises. These are just a couple things that come
to my mind.

Your
home should be timeless. I understand the need to remodel and update
on occasion, but don't let your long term home be defined by today's
latest electronic fads. The fads will go, but your home is forever.
